Donegal is located in the northwest corner of Ireland and dotted along its rugged, indented coastline are some of the finest surfing beaches and golf links in the country. It’s a great place for a family holiday with many attractions to visit such as Glenveagh National Park and Europe’s highest sea cliffs at Sliabh League. The local pub is at the heart of many Irish villages and this is certainly the case throughout County Donegal. The photos below are a small selection of the local bars to be found from Malin Head in north Inishowen to Dunkineely on the shores of Donegal Bay in South Donegal. The pub is the traditional meeting place for the village community and frequently features music sessions and other social activities. The final bid document that will determine whether or not Derry~Londonderry will be the UK City of Culture 2013 left the city today with goodwill messages from local school children and young people who gave it their full backing.

Speaking before she left for Manchester to submit the bid, Oonagh McGillion, temporary Director of Development said it was a privilege to carry the bid to its final destination on behalf of the city.
“We have been overwhelmed by the level of goodwill shown towards the bid and we firmly believe we have the winning bid. On behalf of the bid team and everyone involved I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their support”.

“We feel really confident that we are in with a good chance of securing this title. The support we have received throughout the campaign has been tremendous, people of all ages and backgrounds have pledged their support and given up their time to help us with this bid, let’s hope that the hard work and dedication will pay off and we can deliver the City of Culture title to the city and the whole of Northern Ireland,” she commented.

Local school children and members of the bid team joined the Mayor for a resounding Just Say Yes! This follows from the Cultural Connections reception at the Millennium Forum last night that extended a big thank you to everyone involved in contributing to the bid. The cultural connections reception, was attended by the US Envoy to Northern Ireland, Declan Kelly and the Mayor, Cllr Paul Fleming, who said the support from the public was unprecedented.

US Envoy Declan Kelly said “Derry-Londonderry and the entire region of Northern Ireland possess a great deal of cultural capital and creative talent. A winning bid would create an immense opportunity for the region to further develop its strong cultural base”.

Mayor Cllr Paul Fleming said: “A big thank you to everyone involved in this campaign. We are confident we can win this bid and secure a better future for our young people and help secure jobs, investment and tourists to our historic city.”

Speaking before the bid departed, Oonagh McGillion explained there still is an opportunity to get involved. “On Friday 21st we will be encouraging as many people as possible to join the ranks and spread the news about our city and our bid. You can do this by joining our fans on Facebook, change your profile picture or add a badge, follow us on Twitter, add a Twibbon and add #derry2013 to your update. Add a badge to your website or footer to your emails and if you write a blog about the bid then let us know about it and we will post the link. There is still time to make this happen for us.”

City of Culture 2013

Sea Sessions 2010 will be three days of music and events on the festival site at Main Beach Bundoran, there will be the best in Irish and International talent for three days Friday Saturday and Sunday in the main marquee. There will also be a DJ tent – a Rock tent and various other musical entertainment. The festival site will host food and beverages including alcohol, alternative therapies, art exhibitions and displays by various surfing bodies.

Where is it?

Sea Sessions is based on the Main beach in the centre of Bundoran – you can’t miss it, just follow the sound of the music and the waves. There is a map on the website with directions to both the event site and campsites.

Bundoran is in south Donegal – 5km from Ballyshannon and 37km from Sligo, which has national rail links and an airport.  Direct buses from Dublin will be coming to the event see the ‘getting there’ section of the website for further updates.

Music

Some of the Acts confirmed so far are: Fun Loving Criminals, Paul Weller, Cathy Davey, Andrew Weatherall, Fred, Tom Baxter, David Holmes and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. A Battle of the Bands competition will also be held on the North Shore Stage.

Accommodation

Unofficial Festival Camping will be provided within a few minutes walk from the festival grounds.
Weekend camping is €20pp (Fri 25th – Sun 27th June)

There are numerous accommodation options in Bundoran aside from the festivals unofficial campsite. These range from four star Hotels to luxury self catering holiday homes to surf hostels and approved B&B’s. A weekend pass will also entitle you to access to some normally ticketed nightclubs in Bundoran after the event site closes each evening. Some local businesses may offer special incentives and discounts to ticket holders, these offers are solely at the behest of those premises and not related to Sea Sessions.

Other Activities at the event

Sea Session event site will be hosting a skate board competition, a mountain biking tricks demonstration, BMX freestyle ramps and a Surf Event. Ancillary off site events will include a mini tri-athalon and a tag rugby competition.
