Bandon is a lively, bustling market town in County Cork that lies on the River Bandon between two hills. The town is just 27km west of Cork city and lays claim to the title of being the gateway to West Cork.
The town is of historical interest – it was established in 1608 by Sir Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork – and still has parts of the original town wall. Bandon is a large and thriving regional centre set in a rich agricultural area.
The River Bandon flows through its centre with the town built on either side of its valley. The river is well known for its excellent salmon and trout fishing. In recent years the town has grown and expanded strongly and now is a busy focal centre for the surrounding region.
Tourism is playing an increasing role in the development of the town – in addition to being a good game angling centre Bandon is said to be ‘7 miles from 7 beaches’. Dunworley beach is perhaps the most popular swimming beach with the local residents of Bandon.
The town is also home to the annual Bandon Music Festival in early June which attracts some of Ireland’s most talented musicians. Nearby is the village of Innishannon in a delightful woodland setting
Set on the undulating slopes of the beautiful Bandon Valley, Bandon Golf Club is an 18 hole lay-out enjoying a magnificent parkland setting. Founded in 1909, Bandon was the first West Cork Club to extend to 18 holes.
The clubhouse has recently been refurbished providing excellent new facilities for both members and visitors. The course which is located 2 km west of Bandon boasts a wonderful variety of wildlife.
