Crover House Hotel and Golf Course near Mountnugent has stunning views of Lough Sheelin. The golf course which was built in 2000 has matured very well. It will test your skills with its par 3’s which require an iron shot with pinpoint accuracy into the sand base greens surrounded by deep bunkers.
The greens are built to a very high standard USPGA specification. Horse riding is also available at Ross House which is a local equestrian centre and guesthouse
In the middle ages, Lough Sheelin was a border between the Anglo-Normans and the O’Reilly family. The remains of Crover Castle, which stands on an island on Lough Sheelin, date from this time. Crover House Hotel has been named after the castle and stands on the panoramic shores of Lough Sheelin.
Mountnugent has many reminders of Ireland’s past. One mile from the village at Dungimmin, and dating from the 4th or 5th Century, is one of the few Ogham stones in County Cavan.
Carraig Craft Visitor Centre is a local basketry museum with an exhibition of traditional baskets in rod, rush, and straw. Audio visual presentation, craft shop, tourist information, coffee shop, bus and car park facilities are all available.
Church Island, which lies some distance from the shore of Lough Sheelin, contains ruins of what may be those of a late medieval church which was situated on the island.
